CUMBERLAND — Harold Jay Monroe, 84, of Cumberland, died on Aug. 2, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

He was born on April 13, 1928 in Kingsport, Tenn., the son of Clara Catherine (Miller) and Harold Monroe. He was educated in Tenafly, N.J., schools and played football and baseball on the high school team. During the Korean War he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Monroe was a graduate of the University of Miami, Fla., Columbia University, N.Y., and received his doctorate in psychology from the University of Denver. He worked for the state of Maine for 32 years, first as a staff psychologist at the Maine State Hospital in Augusta and then as assistant superintendent of Pineland Hospital in New Gloucester. He also taught psychology part time at Bowdoin College, Bates College and the University of Southern Maine.

Monroe enjoyed sports, was athletic himself, a good golf partner and was a lifelong fan of the New York Giants. He was a man of great intellect and enjoyed reading various genres and authors.

Monroe is survived by his two sons: Matthew Lee Monroe and his wife, Nancy, of Exeter, N.H., and Gerald Glen Monroe and his wife, Sharon, of Concord, N.H.; his friend and former wife, Joan Monroe, of Durham; his sister, Marilyn Amodeo and her husband, Jim, of Virginia; and his grandchildren Andrew Monroe, of Jacksonville, Fla., Jason Monroe, of Exeter, N.H., and Christopher and Catherine Monroe, of Concord, NH.

A funeral was held Aug. 6 at Linquist Funeral Home with the Rev. Philip Shearman officiating. Interment followed at Moss Side Cemetery in Cumberland.
