The Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust (BTLT) and Crystal Spring Community
Farm will hold their annual New Lamb Day Open House from 1:00 to 3:00
on Sunday May 31 at Crystal Spring Farm located at 277 Pleasant Hill
Road in Brunswick.

Farmer Seth Kroeck said 70 lambs were born during the farm’s first round of lambing between February and March. A second round of lambs has been underway since mid-May, producing an additional 39 lambs.

This is the first year that the farm has undertaken a second round of lambing in one year. The second round of lambs are being born “on pasture”. That means the ewes are giving birth in the pasture rather than in the barn. Kroeck said pasture births are much easier for the ewes and the farmers. The ewes take advantage of the best grass of the year right when they need high nutrition to produce milk. Also, having the sheep in the field and lambing on pasture makes much less work for the farmers as the ewes take care of everything.
