YARMOUTH — Guy William Savage, 96, died Feb. 10, at his home.

He was born in Columbia, Oct. 27, 1917, a son of Gilford Farnsworth Savage and Lola Mae Wallace. Savage is a descendant of John Howland of the Mayflower, the Savages who settled in Woolwich in 1728, and the Wallace family who founded Harrington in 1797 and Milbridge in 1848.

Savage graduated from Columbia Falls High School in 1936 where he was a star basketball and baseball athlete. After graduation he went to the Great Lakes to work as a seaman on freighters with his father and older brother, Walter. On March 11, 1939, he married Pauline Lillian Clark of Machias. He was also employed in the lumber industry.

At the outbreak of World War II, he moved to South Portland to work at the Todd Shipyard. In 1945, he graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in New London, Conn., and was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy Reserves. After the war, he worked in the plumbing and heating business in the Portland area with his brother, Walter.

In January 1947, he enlisted in the Maine State Police and was assigned to Troop B in Scarborough. In 1953, he was promoted to sergeant and transferred to Troop A in Wells and was later promoted to captain and assigned as director of the departments finance and property division. In 1976, he became a toll collector with the Maine Turnpike Authority. He retired from the MTA in 1996 to care for his wife, who had become ill.

Savage was a member of the American Legion Post No. 91, 63-year member of Masonic Lodge, Penobscott No. 39 in Dexter, a 32nd degree Mason in the Valley of Portland and member of Kora Shrine, and past member of the Royal Guard. In 2002, he was awarded the title of Legendary Trooper by the Maine State Police.

He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years; a very dear friend, Laurine Hebert; brothers, Walter and Raymond; and sisters, Margaret Belyea, Edna Mae Savage, Jenny Ellen Bigger, Helen Marie Lydon and Lola Marie Ingersoll.

He is survived by his sons, Breen Reeves Savage and wife, Natalie and Merle Michael Savage and wife, Rebecca; grandsons, Michael Todd Savage and wife, Kathleen and Timothy Park Savage; granddaughter, Melissa Merilee Savage; and great-grandchildren, Gavyn Reece Washburn, Duncan Ryan Washburn, Ian Reed Washburn, Collin Grant Tibbetts, Addison Grace Tibbetts, William Francis Savage, Kirsten Elizabeth Savage, Anna Natalie Savage and Ashley Paige Savage.

Funeral services will be held Feb. 28, at 2 p.m., at the First Parish Congregational Church, 116 Main St. Yarmouth. Savage will be interred beside his wife at the Cousins Island Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.
