YARMOUTH — Merging the town’s past and future will take a step forward at 11 a.m Friday, May 18, with the groundbreaking for the new Yarmouth History Center at 118 East Elm St.

The center is named for Barbara Bean Gorman, a founder of the Yarmouth Historical Society. The new museum and offices for the society will be in the former offices of the Yarmouth Water District. The historical society is now on the third floor of Merrill Memorial Library.

Renovation and construction will add more than 1,600 square feet to the building. Cost estimates for the project are $650,000, with money for the project and future museum operations raised through private contributions from local businesses and individuals.

Work is expected to be completed in November.
