SOUTH PORTLAND — Gretchen Margaret “Marge” Wood, 92, died March 11 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born in Omaha, Neb., on October 14, 1920, the daughter of Sylvia S. Murphy and Charles G. Lytle.

Wood met her beloved husband, Charles Willard “Woody” Wood in Santa Monica, Calif., and they married in 1947. They spent many years in California, where they raised their family. Wood worked most of her adult life and retired from the local phone company. She moved to Maine in 1995, and was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Scarborough, participating in the Women’s Fellowship. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and donating throws to local nursing homes.

In addition to her parents, Wood was predeceased by her loving husband of 48 years in March 1995; two sons, Stephen C. Wood in 1973, and Richard K. Wood in 2004; and her two brothers, Gordon and Bruce Lytle. She is survived by her former daughter-in-law, Maria A. Wood, of Scarborough; two grandsons, Hunter R. and Max R. Wood; a sister, Charlotte Dean; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 22, at the First Congregational Church of Scarborough, 161 Black Point Road. Burial will be private.
