FREEPORT — Greg Thompson, 48, died March 15.

Born in Beeville, Texas, on Dec. 13, 1962, he was a son of Gayle Robert and Judith Thompson.

Although he and his family moved to Freeport only a few years ago, he quickly connected with many people in the community and left a lasting impact through his coaching and volunteer work.

His love of spending time with kids, especially his son, combined with his love of sports, led him to volunteer as a youth sports coach in Freeport. As a coach, his goal was to help kids develop a lifelong love for sports.

In the past few years, he coached his son’s lacrosse team, was an assistant coach for his football team and helped with the wrestling team.  He was extremely proud that his son was following in his footsteps and playing the same sports he did when he was young.

Surviving are his wife, Robin; his son, Garrison; his father, Gayle Thompson and his wife Susan of Minnesota; his mother, Judith Downing and her husband Bud of Michigan; his brother Jeffrey Thompson, his wife, Jackie and their daughter Caitlin, all of Michigan; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bob and Moreen Burkholder of Michigan; his brother-in-law, Mark Burkholder of Michigan; a large extended family; and numerous friends.
