A very intriguing final week of the high school football season awaits and if it’s anything like last weekend, it will be quite compelling indeed.

The biggest story from Week 7 came from Cumberland where Greely didn’t just beat longtime nemesis Mountain Valley for the first time, it absolutely dominated the Falcons, 35-0.

Greely got the only points it would need when quarterback Drew Hodge scored on a first quarter touchdown run. A Hodge-to-Svenn Jacobson TD pass and a Jacobson run made it 21-0 Rangers at halftime. In the third period, Pat Finnegan returned an interception for a touchdown and in the fourth, Hodge hit Nick Maynard with a long TD pass as Greely improved to 6-1 (fifth in the Western Class B Crabtree Points standings).

Elsewhere in Western B, Falmouth gave highly touted Westbrook fits before falling, 32-12, in a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal. The Yachtsmen actually led 12-8 at halftime behind a couple TD runs from Storm Covens, but the Blue Blazes got the game’s final 24 points.

The 1-6 Yachtsmen (10th in Western B) visit Greely in the regular season finale,  better known locally as the “Battle of Route 9,” Friday night. These teams have produced some thrillers in recent years (Falmouth won by margins of 15-14 in 2010 and 31-30 last year).

In Western C, Freeport will host two-time defending state champion Yarmouth with the winner going to the playoffs and the loser going home.

The Falcons are coming off a resounding 52-30 home triumph over Winthrop, their second in a row. Freeport was up 7-0 after one period, 21-8 at halftime, 37-22 after three quarters and pulled away for the victory.

Ben MacMillan (6 carries, 63 yards) and Jared Polley (10 carries, 79 yards in his first game back from injury after sitting out three weeks) both had two TDs, while Dan Burke did a little of everything, rushing for 204 yards on 26 carries, catching a pass for a score and interception a pass on defense. The Falcons compiled 500 yards of offense, including 434 on the ground.

“We let them back in the game, but we finally finished in the fourth quarter,” said Freeport coach Rob Grover.

Freeport improved to 4-3 (good for eighth in the Western C Crabtrees).

The Clippers fell to 1-6 after a 35-20 home loss to Dirigo. Thomas Lord’s early TD run made it 6-0 Yarmouth, but the Cougars roared back and seized control. The highlight for the hosts came on a late 99-yard touchdown run by Caleb Uhl. The ball was spotted as close as possible to the Clippers’ goal line, but Uhl took it the distance to account for the final score.

“Dirigo’s a hell of a team,” Yarmouth coach Chris Pingitore said. “I think talent-wise, they’re probably the best team we played this year. We’ve moved the ball on everybody all year. The problem is the inability to finish making those little mistakes.”

Yarmouth has never lost to Freeport, winning last year’s meeting, 50-6, in Freeport.

The Falcons are looking forward to their first legitimate shot to beat the Clippers.

“I’m not sure if we’re in (the playoffs),” said Grover. “We want to win and we need to win. It’s a good opportunity for us. It will be an emotional day. It’s the last home game. It’s the seniors’ last game. We hope to come out with a win.”
