PORTLAND — Residents can learn how to bring new “life” to gravestones at a workshop on Saturday, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at Evergreen Cemetery.
The workshop, hosted by the city’s Department of Public Services and the Friends of Evergreen, will teach participants hands-on techniques for restoring gravestones according to accepted conservation standards. The workshop will also cover the history of gravestones, and methods of documenting their history.
Ta Mara Conde, an expert on gravestone conservation, will lead the workshop. The fee is $10 per person, paid to the Friends of Evergreen. Participants should meet at the cemetery’s information center, and are asked to pre-register online at friendsofevergreen.org/friends-of-evergreen/upcoming-events/.
Evergreen, at 672 Stevens Ave., is a garden-style cemetery that was established in the early 1850s. With 239 acres, it is the city’s largest open space and the largest cemetery in Maine.
