HARPSWELL — Granville F. Johnson, 90, of Spruce Ledge Road on Bailey Island, died July 17 at Winship Green in Bath.

Johnson was born on the island on Feb. 9, 1924, the son of Harvey and Lizzie (Gregory) Johnson.

Johnson served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was a veteran of both the European and Pacific theaters. On Aug. 24, 1948, he married Joan P. Tenneson. He worked for U.S. Gypsum until retiring in 1986. Later, he and his wife served as volunteers at Parkview Adventist Medical Center.

He was a member of the American Legion, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and cooking on the grill. He was well-known for his homemade biscuits, and he loved strawberry-rhubarb pie.

Johnson was predeceased by brothers Albert and George Johnson, of Bailey Island, and sister Jeannette Soper of Olympia, Washington.

He is survived by Joan, his wife of 66 years; sons, Lawrence Johnson, of Kent, Ohio, and Wayne Johnson and his wife, Diane, of Lewiston; daughters, Lori Stevens and her husband, Herb, of Bowdoin, and Wendy Gerrish and her husband, Bert, of Bailey Island; sister, Barbara Ashley, of Olympia, Washington; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral was held at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn on July 23. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to CHANS Home Health Care, 60 Baribeau Drive, Brunswick, ME 04011.
