PORTLAND — Republican candidates have withdrawn from state Senate races in Districts 27 and 28, according to the Maine secretary of state’s office.

Republicans now have until July 23 to field replacement candidates for the Nov. 6 general election.

Joshua Kelton in District 27 and Patrick Martin in District 28 were unopposed in their party primaries on June 12.

The District 27 race now has incumbent Sen. Ben Chipman, D-Portland, facing independent candidate Crystal Canney. The district covers the city peninsula and extends into East Deering and Back Cove.

In District 28, representing the northern and western parts of Portland and a portion of eastern Westbrook, Rep. Heather Sanborn, D-Portland, is now the only candidate on the ballot.
