BRUNSWICK — The School Board vote unanimously Wednesday night to hire Peter Dawson as interim principal of Brunswick High School.
The former principal at Kennebunk, Yarmouth and Cape Elizabeth high schools will serve from from January 2014 to June 30, 2014.
Dawson, who was one of the three finalists for the permanent job, will turn the position over to Shanna Crofton in July 2014.
“We are very fortunate to have someone of his caliber,” Superintendent of Schools Paul Perzanoski said.
Crofton was hired by the School Board in late October, but she can’t start before next summer because of her current contract as head of secondary school at Oberoi International School in Mumbai, India.
Donna Borowick, the current interim principal, is expected to retire at the end of the year. She was the high school’s assistant principal until former Principal Art Abelmann abruptly resigned last May.
Like Crofton, Dawson is a globetrotter, having most recently finished working as secondary principal for Bonn International School in Bonn, Germany.
Dawson said it was a great experience that allowed him to work with people representing nearly two dozen different nationalities.
Before he served as principal in Kennebunk from 2008-2011, Dawson was upper school principal for the International School of Prague in the Czech Republic.
The incoming interim principal said while he was disappointed he wasn’t chosen for the permanent job, the temporary position is better than not having a job at all.
“I told (Perzanoski) that would work for me,” Dawson said, recalling when Perzanoski told him about the opportunity. “I would be happy with that.”
Despite his planned short tenure, Dawson said he hopes to leave a mark on the high school by placing a high value on relationships with staff and students.
Dawson, who finished at Bonn International School last July, said this is his longest break between jobs in 39 years.
“Certainly, it has made me that much eager to get back and be involved,” he said.
