SCARBOROUGH — Giovanni Profenno, 88, of Scarborough, died March 18 at the Maine Veterans’ Home, with his loving wife and family by his side.

He was born in Portland, Aug. 19, 1925, the son of Peter and Antoinette Profenno. He attended local schools and enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he served as a gunner on the USS Andromeda.

On Jan. 10, 1958, Profenno married Mary K. Ferrar in Cape Elizabeth, where together they made their home and raised their family.

After returning from the war, he went to work as a welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. After retiring, he worked part time for many years at the Inn by the Sea where he was responsible for maintaining the swimming pool.

Profenno was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 832 in South Portland.

He was predeceased by his sister, Camilla Profenno; and brother, Anthony Profenno.

He is survived by his wife, Katie, of Scarborough; six daughters, Diana and husband, Samuel Flint, of South Portland, Kathy and husband, Harold Young III, of Cape Elizabeth, Sherry and husband, Thomas Flemming, of Ohio, Thereasa Profenno, of New Hampshire, Nancy and husband, Larry Thompson, of New Gloucester and Jamie Profenno, of Scarborough; three sons, Joseph and wife, Brenda Hachey, of Alabama, Steven Hachey, of Gorham and John Profenno and wife, Mary Rollo, of South Portland; two sisters, Nancy Kashinsky and Anna Boswell, both of Portland; one brother, Peter and wife, Mary Profenno, of Portland; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held March 21, at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, followed by a service at the funeral home. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
