BRUNSWICK — Gertrude U. Peabody, 87, of Topsham, died Aug. 4 at her home surrounded by family.

She was born in Brunswick, March 6, 1922, the daughter of Ludger and Yvonne Paradis.

After attending schools in Waterville and Brunswick, she graduated from Brunswick High School in 1939.

On Dec. 24, 1943, she married John A. Peabody

During World War II, she worked at Bath Iron Works. Later on, she worked for the Brunswick school department in various positions until she retired in 1982.

She was a charter member of the Brunswick Emblem Club and the Ladies of St. Anne.

She volunteered much of her time at St. Charles Church, The Soup Kitchen, Midcoast Hospital, and drove cancer patients to their treatments.

Her love of hockey included watching her grandsons’ hockey games, Bowdoin hockey games, and the Boston Bruins. She also enjoyed going to Popham Beach and spending time with all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her husband John predeceased her on July 5, 1966.

She is survived by a son, William A. Peabody and his wife JoAnne Rush of Brunswick, and three daughters, Maryjane Donley and her husband Frank of West Bath, Teresa McIrvin and her husband James of Topsham, and Alice “Chickie” Duquesnoy and her husband Michael of Brunswick; a sister, Mary Jane Carlson of New Hampshire; nine grandchildren, Christopher, Phoebe, Joey, Poppy, Heather, Rob, Shelly, John Michael, and Amy; and nine great-grandchildren, Anna Marie, Ella, Brasen, Beckett, Owen, Lucas, Hayden, Autumn, and Asher.

A memorial mass will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Brunswick with the family receiving guests in the parish hall immediately following the service.
