BRUNSWICK — George R. McElman, 78, died peacefully April 25, with his wife by his side.

He was born in Bath on May 22, 1936, to Walter and Christine (Thibodeau) McElman. He attended Bath schools and graduated from Morse High School with the class of 1954.

Following graduation, McElman proudly served in the U.S. Air Force for nine years.

He married Judith Peterson on June 5, 1960, and the couple had two children, Peter and Marta.

After obtaining a business degree from New Hampshire College, McElman owned several local businesses.

Known for his sharp wit and the friendship he demonstrated to many, McElman enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a 32nd-Degree Mason and a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judith; son, Peter, of Standish; daughter, Marta, of Durham; sisters, Marilyn Frizzell, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Stephanie Sullivan, of Northborough, Massachusetts; a sister-in-law, Audrey Alexander, of Vero Beach, Florida; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At McElman’s request, there will be no funeral. A private celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
