SOUTH PORTLAND — George J. Kyle, 87, died peacefully Feb. 19 at his residence.

He was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, on May 31, 1922, the son of Richard and Lena (Coholan) Kyle, and was educated in Calais schools. 

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army and was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

On Oct. 12, 1947, he married Dorothy Junkins.

He worked at Portland Copper for several years and was later employed by Hannaford Bros. as maintenance supervisor until his retirement in 1985.

He was a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

A great carpenter, he enjoyed making home improvements throughout the years. He had a great Irish tenor voice and loved to share his joy of singing with others. 

He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, in 2002, four sisters and one brother.
 
He is survived by his brother, John Kyle of Virginia; son, Bryan Kyle and his wife, Sharleen; grandson, Bryan G. Kyle, Jr., granddaughter, Jennifer L. Thompson and her husband, David; great granddaughters, Brianna L. and Kaylie M. Thompson, all of South Portland; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held earlier this week.

Arrangements are by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
