SCARBOROUGH — George E. Lekousi, 91, died at home April 1 surrounded by friends and family.

Born in Portland on Aug. 18, 1918 to Eustace and Helen Lekousi, he grew up in the West End, one of six children.

After attending Portland High School, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

For many years he worked at the family bakery, Lekousi’s Bakery, as baker and salesperson.

In the 1970s, he and his brother Andrew opened the Westfield Inn, which he managed for nearly 20 years.

He was a life member of the VFW and the Masons, and a long-time member of the Order of AHEPA, a Greek-American fraternal organization, and the Kora Shriners.
 
A gregarious personality, he had many friends.

He had a lifelong interest in art and music and studied violin when he was younger.

An avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching local sporting events, and playing golf.

Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his two grandchildren and supporting their activities.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Ladakakos Lekousi of Scarborough; a brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Freda Lekousi of Westbrook; two children, his daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Christos Papoutsy of New Hampshire, and a son, Louis Lekousi; two grandchildren, Philip and Adara Lekousi of Scarborough; a daughter-in-law, Laurie Lekousi; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held earlier this week.
