TOPSHAM — George Dyer Senter, 93, died July 21 at Cadigan Lodge, The Highlands.  

Born on April 13, 1918, in Portland, he was the seventh of eight children of Emma Thompson and Wilbur Fiske Senter of Brunswick.

After attending public schools in Brunswick, he transferred to Blair Academy in Blairstown, N.J., where he graduated in 1938. He enrolled at Brown University in Providence, R.I., as a member of the class of 1942, and attended three years until he was inducted into the U.S. Army during World War II.  

He served as a Second Lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps stationed in the Aleutian Islands as an anti-aircraft gun unit commander and later as a general’s Aide-de-Camp, and then a mathematics instructor. On Feb. 15, 1946, he was discharged as a First Lieutenant and remained a member of the U.S. Army Reserve until 1953.

Upon his discharge from the Army he returned to Brown University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1947.  

After college, he worked for a supermarket until he turned to education as his lifelong career. Over the years he taught at the New Hampton School in New Hampshire, Peekskill Military Academy in Peekskill, N.Y., and lastly at The Hill School in Pottstown, Penn., where he remained for 31 years until his retirement in 1983. He was completely devoted to, and supportive of, the school for the rest of his life. In June 2005 he was honored by The Hill School by the dedication of a new dormitory on campus as The George D. Senter House.

After he retired to Brunswick in 1983, he became involved with activities at Bowdoin College and served on the Steering Committee of the Association of Bowdoin Friends for a number of years.  He spent his summers on Bailey Island off the coast of Harpswell.

He was predeceased by six of his seven siblings.  

Surviving are his sister, Jane Elizabeth Lee and her husband, Alan, of Green Valley, Ariz.; 13 nephews and nieces and their extended families.

Visiting hours will be on Friday, Aug. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick.  

A family burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6, followed by a memorial reception for friends and family at 12 p.m. in Daggett Lounge on the Bowdoin College campus.
