SOUTH PORTLAND — George C. Wigant, 86, passed away on July 22 at the Barron Center in Portland.

He was born on October 14, 1925 in Portland, the son of Carl E. and Ruth G. (Gustaffson) Wiegandt. He was educated in Portland schools and was a graduate of Portland High School.

Wigant was a WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He was assigned to the USS PT 488, Electric Boat Company, Elco Naval Division, out of Bayonne, N.J., with a tour of duty in the Philippines.

After being honorably discharged, Wigant worked as a customer service representative with Emery-Waterhouse for 38 years, until his retirement. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in South Portland.

George was also a 32-degree member of the Masonic Triangle Lodge in Portland and a member of the Lions in South Portland. He served as assistant coach for both the South Portland Little League and the Senior League Nationals. Wigant’s hobbies included hunting, fishing, cooking and woodworking.

He is predeceased by his brother, Walter Wigant, and two sisters, Doris Robinson and Elizabeth Stevens.

Wigant is survived by his wife of 52 years, Frances Marie; son Gary A. Wigant and his wife, Diane, of Lewiston; daughter Susan Foss and her husband, Greg, of Connecticut; grandchildren Oriana and Malaina Foss, of Connecticut; grandchildren Benjamin and Brian Wigant, of Lewiston; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on July 27 at 10 a.m., with a funeral service at 11 a.m., at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in Forest City Cemetery, South Portland, following the service.
