BRUNSWICK — The Gelato Fiasco, makers and purveyors of Italian-style ice cream at 74 Maine St., is expanding its operations to reach a national market.

Speaking on Tuesday from the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York City, co-founder Joshua Davis said the company in April purchased two buildings on Industry Road, where it will move its main offices and expand production.

Davis said the expansion will allow the company to extend its wholesale business to a national clientele.

The company makes half of its revenue from wholesale customers, he said, servicing more than 300 grocery stores, restaurants and cafes in the northeast.

That business grew by about 40 percent last year, Davis said, and he expects the growth to continue.

“It’s just grown to be a big enough business that we have outgrown our store on Maine Street,” he said. “We had an opportunity to buy this property and we thought it was a great fit with our location in Brunswick. It fits with the next stage of growth in the company.”

The Gelato Fiasco employs about 50 people at two retail locations in Brunswick and on Fore Street in Portland, Davis said, but many of them share administrative responsibilities on the operations side.

“Everyone has two jobs,” he said.

With the purchase of property at 2 and 4 Industry Road, Davis said he expects the company to hire more people to support the expanded business.

“We’ve been hiring for five years straight, and the only thing that has stopped us from (hiring more people) is to have space to do orders,” he said.

Davis said internal renovations are nearly complete at the 2 Industry Road building, where the company will have office space that is now in a basement of the Maine Street store.

The building at 4 Industry Road will initially be used for storage, he said.
