SOUTH PORTLAND — Gary A. Clement, 59, of South Portland, died Aug. 17 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

Clement was born in Hackensack, N.J., a son of George Carl and Laura Chasse Clement.

He was a 1972 graduate of Sparta High School in New Jersey. He went on to graduate from Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in 1975 and from the University of Southern Maine in 1979. He was a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

For 31 years Clement was employed with Sappi Fine Paper as a research and development scientist.

Outside of work, he had numerous hobbies. He was a member of the American Home Brewers Association, and was a certified beer judge. Clement also was a member of the Maine Ale and Lager Tasters Club and excelled as a micro-brewer. He traveled to Europe and especially enjoyed visiting Germany to exchange brewing recipes.

Clemen also was an outdoorsman who enjoyed scuba diving, photography and shooting sports. He was a member of the Scarborough Rod and Gun Club.

On Feb. 14, 2002 he married Hannnah L Witt in Newport, R.I.

He is survived by his beloved wife, of South Portland; a daughter, Dawn E. Clement and her husband Michael Brackett, of Portland; two brothers, Edward T. Clement and his wife Anna, of Dunedin, Fla., and Charles L. Clement and his wife Diane, of Cumberland; six nieces and nephews and 11 great-nieces and -nephews.

A funeral service was held Tuesday at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel. Burial was in the Eastern Cemetery, in Gorham.
