BRUNSWICK — Brunswick Park and Gardens has abandoned its goal of building a botanical garden at Brunswick Landing.

In an e-mail statement, President Herschel Sternlieb said the group has been frustrated by the base redevelopment process, and has been unable to secure the land it wanted.

Most recently, the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority offered 50 acres of land that the group rejected, citing concerns about the property’s proximity to contaminated groundwater.

Now the organization is trying to identify a good site further south of Brunswick, to avoid overlapping with the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay. It is also considering reorganizing as a for-profit enterprise, Sternleib said.
