PORTLAND—Deering football coach Jon Gallant has resigned, The Forecaster learned Tuesday afternoon.

Deering athletic director Melanie Craig confirmed that Gallant stepped down for “personal and family reasons.”

Gallant, a longtime assistant under Greg Stilphen, coached the Rams to the playoffs each of his two seasons as the head man, going 6-4 in 2011 and 3-6 last fall, losing to Cheverus in the playoffs each year (49-0 in the semifinals in 2011 and 49-0 in the quarterfinals last season).

“We thank Coach Gallant for his time with the program and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors,” said Craig.

Deering, which has been a perennial contender since the turn of the century, will open a search for a new coach, Craig said.
