FREEPORT — After two years of serving the residents of Freeport, plus years of prior experience, Tracey Stevens has been named Maine Town Clerk of the Year.

The award, presented by the Maine Town and City Clerks Association, was presented to Stevens Sept. 9 at MTCCA’s annual business meeting.

Stevens said she was very surprised.

“I was shocked,” she said. “I was extremely humbled and honored.”

Before coming to Freeport, Stevens worked as town clerk in Fairfield for eight years. She said being town clerk is very important to her.

“Serving as town clerk is more than a job to me,” Stevens said. “It’s a professional career.”

Town Manager Peter Joseph, who wrote a letter to MTCCA in support of Stevens’ nomination, said Stevens goes out of her way to do the best job possible.

“She’s professional. She’s great,” Joesph said. “She has a really high work ethic and takes things very seriously.”

Freeport Town Hall is open Monday through Thursday, but Joseph said Stevens has been known to come in on Fridays and Saturdays to accommodate residents.

“It’s impressive,” he said. “People don’t have to do that.”

Joseph said Stevens recently opened on a Friday for a military member who was home on a short leave and needed a marriage certificate.

“She doesn’t do that kind of stuff to be recognized,” Joseph said. “She does it for customer service.”

Joseph said Stevens is great to work with and that many other town employees agree. He said many of them also wrote letters of support to MTCCA.

“She’s really deserving,” Joseph said. “I’m really glad to see it go to someone who works so hard day in and day out.”

Stevens chairs the MTCCA’s legislative policy committee, and said she reports to the state and advocates for clerks on issues that affect them. She also instructs other clerks in the state.

Stevens said one day is never like another in her day-to-day job serving the nearly 8,000 residents of Freeport.

“I do so many unique things,” she said. “It’s always something different.”

Stevens registers voters, supervises elections, does records management, hands out licenses, makes the agenda for Town Council, and many other things. She said her favorite part of the job is customer interaction.

“The people here are amazing,” Stevens said. “There are really genuine people here and I love serving them.”
