FREEPORT — Figures of Speech Theatre was awarded two grants in support of a community-wide educational residency in Eastport this winter, in partnership with the Eastport Arts Center.

Three FST artists will spend two hours a day from Jan. 22-26 with seventh- and eighth-grade students in the Eastport School District, adapting local tales into live shadow plays.

Throughout the week, the artists will spend two additional hours with students in kindergarten through sixth grade and offer a master class for adults. “The Art of Memory: Stories from Eastport” will be performed live for the entire community Jan. 26, 2018, at the Eastport Arts Center.

Maine Community Foundation contributed $1,800 from its Maine Expansion Arts Fund and Maine Arts Commission awarded the theatre an Arts Learning Grant of $1,500. The Helen and George Ladd Charitable Foundation donated an additional $1,750.

For the residency, FST’s Director of Education Ian Bannon will be joined by musician Director Dave Noyes and visual artist Devon Kelly Yurdin, who previously worked at Eastport Arts Center as the publicity, outreach and education director.
