FREEPORT — A section of Flying Point Road that has been closed since Sept. 12 may partially reopen as soon as Friday, Sept. 23, town officials said.

The road over Kelsey Brook, an area between John’s Road and Lupin Lane, was closed last week so construction crews could stabilize the failing road over the culvert.

Town Engineer Albert Presgraves said the contractor has been working to prepare a stable base that will allow a single lane of traffic.

The replacement culvert is open-bottomed and looks like an arched bridge, Presgraves said. It promotes fish passage and stream ecology, and is expected to last 75 years or more.

Until the road is stabilized, residents are asked to continue to use Pleasant Hill, Highland and Bunganuc roads as a detour.
