FREEPORT — The Freeport Players theater group has hired Janie Downey Maxwell, of Cape Elizabeth, as executive director.

Over the past several years, Maxwell has been involved in the Freeport Players, the Portland Players and South Portland’s Lyric Music Theater.

“Maxwell is experienced in directing, props and costumes, and producing,” according to a press release. “She has a history of management at non-theatrical organizations. In addition, she created and led a children’s drama program at Cumberland schools.”

Maxwell will begin her new role by helping with the summer production of six one-act plays at the Freeport Performing Arts Center from July 12-29. She will also produce the fall play, “I’ll Be Back Before Midnight” and direct “Radio” in December.

“I’m thrilled to be working with the Freeport Players board,” Maxwell said in the release. “I look forward to using my creative and organizational skills to continue their tradition of producing wonderful community theater for the greater Freeport area.”
