FREEPORT — The Town Council approved an after-the-fact environmental permit application Tuesday night for part of the Hunter and Pownal roads fields.

It also approved spending $35,000 to begin a comprehensive shellfish research project aimed at discovering the root of a decline in the soft-shell clam population. Last week, the council approved an appropriation of up to $67,000 in the fiscal 2014 budget for the project. The budget still requires council passage.

The Department of Environmental Protection permit is in addition to another development permit for storm water improvements.
