Falcons down host Lake Region, 7-5

It was a long time in coming, but the Freeport baseball team finally had a reason to celebrate Monday afternoon.

The Falcons ended a two-year, 23-game losing skid with a 7-5 victory at Lake Region, thanks in large part to another superb pitching effort from sophomore Spencer Egan and some timely hitting from junior Kyle Moore and senior Jon Klages.

“The kids needed to feel that,” said longtime Freeport coach Hank Ogilby. “We were very excited. We didn’t want to overdo it, but I couldn’t control them. I was a little excited myself.”

The Falcons’ last win was a 3-1 home triumph over Wells on May 28, 2007.

They trailed 3-0 early, but after producing just four runs in the first seven games, the offense came to life. Moore (four hits, including three doubles) led the way as Freeport rallied to eventually lead 6-4 before the hosts got a run back. The Falcons tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh and Egan (who got the win with six solid innings) gave way to Klages (two RBI), who came in and played the Jonathan Papelbon role to the hilt, slamming the door to secure the 7-5 win.

“We hit better than ever,” Ogilby said. “We had good defense and pitching. We had four freshmen in the field, but the kids did a great job.

“They needed to believe in themselves a little bit. We’re asking a lot of the freshmen to make the jump right to varsity. They needed to see that I did believe in their ability. We’re only going to get better.”

The Falcons went to Wells Wednesday (too late for print), host Yarmouth Saturday and go to NYA Monday.
