FREEPORT — Ten free compost bins are available on a first-come basis at the recycling center, part of an effort to increase the town’s recycling rate by 5 percent over the next five years.

Town Engineer Albert Presgraves said the bins and kitchen pail scoops will be given to the first 10 residents who commit to attending an Oct. 17 meeting of the town Solid Waste and Recycling Committee. The meeting will allow committee members to hear how well back-yard composters work in reducing waste.

Presgraves said the 2011 recycling rate was 28.5 percent.

Presgraves said bins are also available for sale at the recycling center for $53. For more information on the program, call committee member Sandy Thompson at 710-0324.
