PORTLAND — Frank Thomas Tyson, 77, of Cumberland, died Sept. 8 with family by his side.

Born on Feb. 7, 1932, in Canton, Ohio, he was a son of Maxine E. (Carpenter) and Miller S. Tyson.

He attended schools in Massachusetts, graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Babson College in Wellesley, Mass. While in college, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

On July 27, 1953, he married Judith Tibbitts and together they had four children.

In 1980 the family moved from Boxford, Mass., to Maine.

An avid and experienced sailor, life for him was all about the sea. He worked in the marine industry and raced sailboats locally, nationally and internationally.

His many friends will remember him for his generosity, humor, teamwork and reliability. He was a man of broad intellect with a unique knowledge of the ocean.

He was predeceased by his two brothers, Richard and Robert.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Judith Tyson; his four children and their families, Christopher T. Tyson and his wife Laura of Yarmouth and their children, Bradford, Jessica and Matthew; Peter B. Tyson and his wife Therese of Scarborough and their children, Jordan and Amanda; Julie A. Hildreth and her husband George of North Yarmouth and their children, Sean, Julia and Samuel; John M. Tyson of Scarborough and his children: Christopher, Meghan and Owen.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 17, at Foreside Community Church, 340 Foreside Road, Falmouth.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 169 Lancaster St., Portland, ME 04101.
