FREEPORT — Frank E. Garland, III, 87, died peacefully Feb. 12 at Maine Medical Center with his family at his side. 

Born in Tucson, Ariz., Jan. 31, 1924, he was a son of Frank E. Garland, II, and Beulah Chandler Berry.

For 41 years he worked for Maine Central Railroad, retiring in 1984 as general foreman of Rigby Engine House in South Portland. 

A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he gave unconditional love to his family.

He created a family harmonica band called The Harmonica Kids  and they played throughout Maine and on local and national TV in the 1950s and ’60s.  

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Phyllis H. Garland; three daughters, Ramona Campbell and her husband Edward, Donna Brewer and her husband Bradley, Tami Terpstra and her husband Gerard, and four sons, Frank E. Garland, IV, and his wife Janet, David Garland and his wife Deanna, Lawrence Garland, Stephen Garland and Catherine Kroot; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

There will be no funeral services.
