BATH — The cause of death of a 39-year-old Bath man, whose body was discovered by his girlfriend Sunday afternoon, remains undetermined.

Police believe Joel Theriault died overnight Saturday in his Lilac Street home bed, where he was later found, and that his 4-year-old child was unsupervised in the residence until her mother, Theriault’s girlfriend, came to pick her up after 3 p.m. Sunday.

Lt. Robert Savary of the Bath Police Department reiterated Tuesday that investigators do not believe Theriault was a victim of foul play.

Savary said Theriault’s last known contact with another person came via a phone call with a friend at approximately 8 p.m. Saturday.

Mark Belserene, administrator of the state medical examiner’s office, said in an email Tuesday that an autopsy has been completed, but the case is “pending further study,” and more information may be available in a few weeks.
