Vignola and Cinque Terre restaurants of downtown Portland are teaming up to host the first annual VCT Open at the Sable Oaks Golf Course in South Portland on Aug. 17.
Proceeds will benefit both the Center for Grieving Children, a local non-profit that provides loving support for grieving children, teens, family and the community through peer support, outreach and education and Global Health Narratives for Change, a new, national non-profit that is dedicated to educating youth about health problems in the U.S and abroad by developing educational resources including books, a curriculum focused website, teaching guides and videos.
Portland’s Karla Stockmeyer, formerly one of the “Magnificent Seven” who helped lead the Waynflete girls’ lacrosse team to a state-record 36-game win streak and state championships in 2003, 2004 and 2005, feels that this unique approach will benefit all concerned.
“Global Health Narratives for Change, the non-profit I have been interning for all summer, and the Center for Grieving Children both believe in the well-being and power of youth,” said Stockmeyer, who is entering her senior year at Davidson College in North Carolina where she is majoring in Spanish and playing club lacrosse. “The two organizations complement each other well.”
Steve Souza, the co-manager of Vignola and Cinque Terre, wanted to organize a golf tournament and Stockmeyer, who serves as a hostess at Cinque Terre and has helped produce fundraisers at Davidson, put the pieces together.
Stockmeyer said that it took four to five weeks to plan and that despite the late start, several key sponsors (such as Starbucks and National Distributors) are on board.
“We hope to have 100 golfers,” Stockmeyer said. “I’d be very happy if we raise $5,000 this year.”
The tournament begins at 8 a.m. Monday and goes until 2:30 p.m. The cost to participate is $110, which includes 18 holes of golf, a gift bag and a post-match banquet at Cinque Terre. There will also be raffles and prizes.
