PORTLAND — A former city police officer will spend 60 days in jail and has repaid funds he stole from a friend.

Bruce Chase, 63, was sentenced Friday, May 1, on charges of Class B theft and Class D misuse of entrusted property, Cumberland County District Attorney Stephanie Anderson announced.

He was also sentenced to two years probation by Justice Roland Cole in the Cumberland County Unified Criminal Docket.

Chase was found guilty of stealing $159,000 from city resident Penelope Cobb after the death of her husband in 2008. He had been given power of attorney by her, and Anderson said Cobb discovered last year she only had $2,000 left in her accounts.

Chase was also a Maine Drug Enforcement Agent and internal affairs investigator with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. His family provided the restitution, Anderson said.
