HARPSWELL — The Orr’s & Bailey Islands Fire Department set new fundraising records during its annual auction and yard sale in August. According to a press release, the event raised more than $36,000 to benefit the volunteer fire and rescue department, an increase of 25 percent over last year.
Nearly two-thirds of the proceeds came from the auction. A fishing boat, an 1800s sea captain’s chest, a full-length mink coat, an electric golf cart and a roll-top desk were among the auctioned items. A baked pie also raised $500 for the department’s scholarship fund.
The department also raised more than $1,700 by raffling a hand-made quilt. The queen-sized quilt was made by Orr’s Island resident Conny Barker in honor of the late Walter F. “Ted” Barker, the department’s photographer and board member.
OBIFD provides fire and rescue services for Orr’s and Bailey Islands, as well as portions of Great Island.
