PORTLAND — Fire and police officials are investigating the cause of a fire that broke out late this morning on a third-floor deck above Wharf Street in the Old Port, according to Police Department Lt Tony Ward.

The deck is in the same building as Gritty McDuff’s and is attached to office space, including the offices of The Bollard, a local news publication.

Richard Pfeffer, owner of Gritty’s and the building, told a photographer he had just left his office in the building to get a haircut when he saw the flames. He said he could not believe the speed at which firefighters responded and worked to put out the blaze.

The fire was reported around 11:30 a.m. and was extinguished by about 12:30 p.m.
