PORTLAND — In advance of Memorial Day, which is May 27, Portland will be the site of a screening of a 2010 documentary about how a small Maine town coped with the impact of the Iraq War.
Lee, a town of 845 people about 60 miles north of Bangor, was home to two soldiers killed in 2007 while serving in Iraq. With the deaths of Blair Emery and Joel House, the town became the smallest community in the country to lose two residents in the war, according to a press release.
The film explores the way other Lee residents, with different opinions on the war, came to terms with the loss of Emery and House.
The screening is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22, at 6 p.m., at One Longfellow Square. Admission is free, but donations are suggested.
Coordinated by the Portland chapter of the Maine Military and Community Network, the screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Cumberland County veterans of wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Korea, Vietnam, and World War II.
The Maine Military and Community Network is a nonprofit collaborative serving veterans and their families, and that includes the Portland Vet Center, Pine Tree Legal Assistance, Preble Street Resource Center, the University of Southern Maine and other members.
