PORTLAND — The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded almost $4 million to Maine’s largest airports, with $2.8 million earmarked for the Portland International Jetport.

The grants were announced July 13 in a news release from U.S. Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Angus King, an independent.

The grant for the Jetport will fund the expansion of an apron area used by commercial planes outside the terminal. Adding 8,300 square feet to the space is part of the Jetport master plan to accommodate increased traffic.

The $1.12 million awarded to the Bangor International Airport will fund acquisition and installation of a new passenger loading bridge for domestic air travel.
