SCARBOROUGH — A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project to dredge the Scarborough River could begin this fall, according to a joint news release from U.S. Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Angus King, I-Maine.
The senators said $3.5 million for the work is available from the federal Supplemental Appropriations Act signed by President Barack Obama on Jan. 29. The Corps of Engineers has allocated the money because of excessive shoaling the river sustained during Hurricane Sandy.
Town Manager Tom Hall said the project will improve passages for recreational boaters and commercial watermen while replenishing sand on river beaches. The Corps of Engineers is now planning the project.
