Morse’s Mason Savary gets the better of Mt. Ararat/Brunswick’s Kyle Graffam during last week’s wrestling meet.
The final games of the winter sports regular season are upon us and with the girls’ hockey playoffs beginning next week, that means the calendar is about to flip to February and it’s time to start thinking about championships.
Here’s a glimpse at what happened last week and a look at what’s upcoming:
Boys’ basketball
Brunswick and Mt. Ararat’s boys’ basketball teams appear playoff-bound, while Morse has some work to do with a little over a week remaining in the regular season.
The Dragons were 7-7 and sixth in the Class A South Heal Points standings after a 77-73 overtime home loss to Medomak Valley and a 56-51 setback at Messalonskee. Against the Panthers, Noah Cox had 22 points and Finn Mitchell added 15, but Brunswick let a late lead slip away and couldn’t respond in OT.
“We let one get away,” lamented Dragons coach Todd Hanson. “We got in a rut where we missed our opportunities, whether it was timely turnovers, missed free throws, bad decisions, it was self-inflicted wounds, and once the dam broke, it was hard to plug it back in.”
Brunswick was home with Lincoln Academy Tuesday, goes to Leavitt Saturday, visits defending Class AA champion Edward Little Tuesday of next week, then closes next Thursday at Mt. Ararat.
The Eagles were seventh in Class A South at press time at 9-6 following a 66-51 victory at Camden Hills last Thursday. Mt. Ararat played at Lewiston Thursday, visits Medomak Valley Tuesday of next week, then closes at home next Thursday against Brunswick.
Morse was 3-11 and 10th in the region (only nine qualify) heading into Tuesday’s home tilt versus Maranacook. The Shipbuilders play at Leavitt Friday, host Cony Tuesday of next week, then close at Camden Hills next Thursday.
Girls’ basketball
On the girls’ side, Brunswick remains second to defending champion Greely in Class A South after improving to 14-1 with wins at Medomak Valley (45-22) and at home over Messalonskee (66-37). The Dragons visited Lincoln Academy Tuesday, welcome defending Class AA champion Edward Little Tuesday of next week, then close at Mt. Ararat next Thursday.
The Eagles were 7-8 and sixth in Class A South following a 42-30 home loss to Camden Hills last Thursday. Mt. Ararat welcomed Lewiston Thursday, plays host to Medomak Valley Tuesday of next week and close at home versus Brunswick next Thursday.
Morse was 0-14 and 13th in the region (nine teams reach the playoffs) heading into Tuesday’s contest at Maranacook. The Shipbuilders welcome Leavitt Friday, visit Cony Tuesday of next week and close at home versus Camden Hills next Thursday.
Girls’ hockey
On the ice, both Brunswick and Mt. Ararat/Morse look as if they’ll miss the postseason.
The Dragons were 2-14-1 and seventh in the North Region (where six teams qualify) after Saturday’s 6-2 loss at Winslow/Gardiner. Brunswick closed at home versus Edward Little/Leavitt Thursday.
Mt. Ararat/Morse fell to 2-13-1 and eighth in the region after Friday’s 7-0 home loss to Yarmouth/Freeport. Mt. Ararat/Morse closed with games at Gorham/Bonny Eagle Tuesday and Winslow/Gardiner Thursday.
The girls’ hockey playoffs begin with the quarterfinals Wednesday of next week on the home ice of the higher seeds.
Boys’ hockey
On the boys’ side, the Mt. Ararat/Morse/Lisbon/Hyde co-op team was 6-7-1 and fifth in Class A North after Saturday’s 3-1 loss at Massabesic. The squad was at Lake Region Tuesday, then travels to Westbrook/Windham Wednesday of next week.
Brunswick was 7-6 and sixth in Class B South following Friday’s 3-2 home loss to Leavitt. The Dragons host defending Class B South champion Greely Saturday, then visits Kennebunk Wednesday of next week.

Morse was 15-11 after a 52-28 loss to Mt. Ararat/Brunswick, a 42-31 win over Ellsworth, a 72-0 win over Lincoln Academy, a 60-12 victory over Penobscot Valley and a 48-34 loss to Belfast.
