The month of February means champions will be crowned in abundance.

Forecaster Country features potential champions in every winter sport, meaning the next few weeks will be memorable.

Here’s a glimpse:

Boys’ basketball

Brunswick’s boys’ basketball team continued its strong season last week by improving to 12-5 and fourth in the Class A South Heal Points standings with wins at Cony (59-39), Leavitt (82-36) and Mt. Ararat (50-48). The Dragons closed at home against Lewiston Tuesday.

Mt. Ararat sandwiched losses to visiting Oceanside (66-55) and Brunswick (50-48) around a 61-46 win at Lewiston and began the week 11-5 and fifth in Class A South. The Eagles were at Medomak Valley Tuesday and hosted Edward Little Thursday.

Morse was 4-12 and 10th at press time, but only nine teams make the playoffs. Last week, the Shipbuilders lost at Erskine Academy (58-48) and at home to Medomak Valley (59-50). Morse was at Waterville Tuesday and closed at home versus Winslow Thursday.

Girls’ basketball 

There was plenty of excitement last week on the girls’ side as well.

Brunswick sandwiched wins over visiting Cony (55-40) and host Mt. Ararat (51-45) around a 56-50 home loss to Leavitt. The Dragons entered Tuesday’s finale at Lewiston with an 11-6 record and the No. 4 ranking in Class A South.

Morse was 9-7 and fifth in Class A South after beating visiting Erskine Academy (40-26) and host Medomak Valley (52-32). The Shipbuilders were home with Waterville Tuesday and went to Winslow Thursday.

Mt. Ararat was 1-15 and 12th in Class A South (only nine teams make the playoffs) after its skid hit 14 games with losses at Oceanside (53-47), at home to Lewiston (50-45) and at home to Brunswick (51-45). The Eagles welcomed Medomak Valley Tuesday and closed at Edward Little Thursday. 

In Class C South, Hyde was playoff-bound at 5-11 and 10th (14 teams qualify) after a 45-28 loss at Sacopee Valley, a a 73-32 setback at Old Orchard Beach and a 52-47 setback at Pine Tree Academy. 

Boys’ hockey

Brunswick’s boys’ hockey team improved to 8-5-1 and third in Class B South after Saturday’s 6-3 home win over Kennebunk. The Dragons went to second-ranked Gardiner Tuesday and visit top-ranked Yarmouth Saturday.

Mt. Ararat’s co-op team with Morse and Lisbon was 7-5 and seventh in Class A North at press time (only six teams make the playoffs). A 6-1 win at Poland last week was the lone recent action. Mt. Ararat/Morse/Lisbon went to South Portland Thursday, host Windham Saturday and visit Leavitt Wednesday of next week. 

Girls’ hockey

The girls’ hockey playoffs are underway.

Brunswick went 8-9-1 and earned the sixth and final playoff spot in the North region. The Dragons closed with a 6-2 win at Winslow. Brunswick went to No. 3 Lewiston (10-7-1), the defending state champion, for the quarterfinals Wednesday. The Blue Devils won both regular season meetings, 4-1 and 6-0. If the Dragons sprung an upset, they’d go to second-ranked St. Dom’s (16-2) for the semifinals Friday or Saturday. The Saints beat Brunswick twice this year, 8-0 and 12-2.

The regional finals are Wednesday of next week in Lewiston and the state final is Saturday, Feb. 13 in Lewiston.

Mt. Ararat/Morse missed the playoffs with a 1-17 record, which left it eighth in the North, where only six teams qualified.

Indoor track

Brunswick’s boys were second and the girls third in the final regular season indoor track meet last weekend. Mt. Ararat’s girls were fourth and the boys fifth. Both Morse teams placed seventh.

The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championship meet will be held Saturday at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

The Class B state meet is Saturday, Feb. 13 at Bates College in Lewiston. The Class A state meet will be held at USM, Monday, Feb. 15.

Swimming

The swimming regular season wrapped up Friday. Brunswick’s boys beat Cony, 98.5-66.5, and the girls beat the Rams, 93-77.

The KVAC championship meet will be held Saturday in Bath.

Skiing

Brunswick’s girls’ Nordic ski team was 15th out of 24 scoring teams that took part in last weeekend’s Sassi Memorial classical race at Black Mountain. Lena Martin was 20th individually with a time of 19 minutes, 46.1 seconds.

Wrestling

The KVAC wrestling championship meet was held last weekend. Mt. Ararat/Brunswick came in ninth out of 20 scoring teams, while Morse placed 11th.

The regional meet is Saturday.

The Class A state meet is Saturday, Feb. 13.
