Auer had a fantastic senior season, serving as an ambassador for his sport and having no peer in his top event.

Auer is from Bloomington, Indiana, where basketball is king, but he gravitated to running in middle school and after moving to Falmouth five years ago, he was a natural to step right in and bolster one of the state’s premier programs.

“I’m passionate about people who run,” said Auer. “Winning is important to me, but team success means more. I’m more proud of team accomplishments.”

Auer was ninth in Class A in the indoor mile as a freshman and was 12th as a sophomore, but his junior year, Auer moved up to fifth in the mile and was sixth in the 800.

This winter, Auer proved to be the finest mile runner in Class A. At Southwesterns he was first in 4 minutes, 26.96 seconds. At the state meet, Auer finished first in 4:26.86. He also ran at New Englands, posting a mile time of 4:37.95.

“I was very happy with the season,” said Auer. “We had a new distance coach (Alanna McDonough) who did a really good job. Personally, I had a good season and so did the team.”

Auer is also the editor of the school paper, belongs to the math team and competes in the high school quiz show. He hopes to have a strong outdoor season, then he will attend Bowdoin College in the fall, where he will continue to run.

John Auer, Falmouth’s Winter Male Athlete of the Year, made quite an impact on his team and ran away from the competition in a season to remember.

Coach Jorma Kurry’s comment: “John dedicates himself to the sport. He does all the little things at practice and on his own to be the best he can. He has been a pleasure to coach and has worked well with his teammates and coaches across all seasons. He is a natural leader who always steps up to do whatever he can to help the team on the track and behind the scenes.”

Distance coach Alanna McDonough’s comment: “John is a true student of his craft. His dedication to the sport and genuine thoughtfulness are hard to match. Because of this he trains with purpose — he approaches each practice and each exercise with the mindset that if it is done correctly and thoughtfully, he will gain and grow from it. Which he does. This attitude radiates to his teammates, who look up to him immensely. He is wildly humble and cares deeply about his teammates, always wanting them to grow and achieve success with him. I am very lucky to be his coach.”

Sarazin started playing hockey in middle school, following the lead of her older sister, Devon.

“I always followed in Devon’s footsteps,” said Sarazin. “My parents introduced sports when I was very young and that made me very competitive. Sports are a great outlet.”

Sarazin, a self-described offensive-minded defender, was named an all-star as a sophomore. This winter, Sarazin scored 13 goals, which was second on the team, had 23 points, which was second on the squad, and she had a team-high 10 assists. Her finest game was in the South Region quarterfinals, when she scored four times to help Falmouth down Portland/Deering, 7-1. Sarazin then scored two more goals in the semifinals, but the Yachtsmen lost to Scarborough, 5-2.

“I was very happy with the season, we had a great time,” said Sarazin, who was named a finalist for the Becky Schaffer Award, given to the state’s top senior player. “The team was very supportive of each other.”

Sarazin also ran cross country in high school and is a standout in lacrosse for the defending Class A state champions. She belongs to student council and National Honor Society and will play lacrosse and study nursing at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia next year.

Kayla Sarazin, Falmouth’s Winter Female Athlete of the Year, used her speed, athleticism, scoring touch and leadership to produce a senior campaign that won’t soon be forgotten.

Coach Rob Carrier’s comment: “There aren’t enough great things I can say about Kayla. She’s a remarkable young lady. She has a positive attitude all the time and gives her teammates lots of encouragement. She is the hardest worker and always the first one on the ice. Her skill-set starts with her vision. She sees the entire ice which allows her to plan a route to carry the puck or find an open teammate to make a pass. She has good speed, but more importantly, she has good acceleration which enables her to catch opponents off guard and you add some shiftiness and that means she’s a dangerous player who can go anywhere. She also happens to have a really good shot. From in close to out by the blue line, it’s always accurate with plenty of zip on it. Lastly, she’s pesky defender, always getting in the way, deflecting shots, taking away passes, stealing the puck and she’s always right where she’s supposed to be.”
