Lee Whittier, 82, was hit by a sport utility vehicle near the Portland police station on Middle Street at approximately 5:20 p.m. She was taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment, where she later died from her injuries.

Middle Street, between Franklin Street and Pearl Street, was closed to traffic for approximately two hours after the accident.

“There is nothing further to report at this time,” Sweatt said.

Falmouth Police Lt. John Kilbride said his department has had no involvement in the case.

Portland police said visibility was poor because it was dark and rainy at the time. Police also said Whittier was not in a marked crosswalk when she was crossing from Middle to Church street.

Whittier is survived by her husband Charles, three sons, and seven grandchildren.
