PORTLAND — A Falmouth woman who was struck by a car Thursday evening died as a result of her injuries.

Lee Whittier, 82, was hit by a sport utility vehicle near the Portland police station on Middle Street at approximately 5:20 p.m. She was taken to Maine Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries.

Police identified the driver of the car as Tori Stewart, 36, of Yarmouth. Stewart was driving a 2005 Honda CRV. There have been no charges filed to date, and the crash remains open and under investigation, according to Portland Police Lt. James Sweatt.

“There is nothing further to report at this time,” Sweatt said.

Portland police said because it was dark and rainy at the time, visibility was poor. Police also said Whittier was not in a marked crosswalk when she was crossed  from Middle to Church street.

Middle Street, between Franklin Street and Pearl Street, was closed to traffic for approximately two hours.

Whittier is survived by her husband, Charles, three sons and seven grandchildren.

Anyone with additional information about the crash is asked to call the Portland Police Traffic Division at 874-8532.
