Falmouth senior boys’ tennis star Justin Brogan, a state singles finalist in 2011 and 2012, will attend and play tennis at Tufts University in Medford, Mass., next school year. Brogan looked at several schools, including Bowdoin College and Division I Villanova, but ultimately gave Tufts the nod.
“I really like the program,” said Brogan, who expects to be asked to play singles or doubles and plans to study political science. “It’s very strong. They’re poised to have a top 10 recruiting class. It’s a great location. The school is very strong academically. It fit the bill in every way. I’m excited.”
Brogan, who didn’t play for Falmouth his junior year, but helped the Yachtsmen to Class B state team titles as a freshman and sophomore, hopes to team with fellow singles standouts Brendan McCarthy and Aidan McGrory to lift Falmouth back to the pinnacle this coming spring.
“I hope to have a very good high school season,” Brogan said. “I’d like to win a state championship as an individual and as a team. We have such good team camaraderie.”
Longtime Falmouth coach Bob McCully feels that Brogan, the highest ranked junior player in Maine for boys 18 and under, is poised to help the Jumbos succeed.
“Tufts is a great fit for Justin,” McCully said. “Its academics and tennis program are both outstanding. Justin is a great athlete, he would be successful at just about any sport he committed to. I’ve never been one of his classroom teachers, but I know he’s an excellent student, so it would be inappropriate to attribute his success in tennis to athletic ability alone. He works very hard, putting in long hours of practice and training and he’s consistently challenged himself against top players both in his age group and against top-ranked adults.”
