FALMOUTH — The School Board on Monday night unanimously banned the use of electronic cigarettes on school grounds.

The board updated policy language to add electronic cigarettes to its list of substances banned from school property. The policy revisions were required by the state.

Electronic cigarettes are defined by the National Institute of Drug Abuse as battery-operated devices that deliver nicotine with flavorings and other chemicals to users in the form of vapor instead of smoke. They are also known as e-cigarettes and electronic nicotine delivery systems, or ENDS.

So instead of simply banning the use of tobacco and nicotine substances on school grounds with an exception made for necessary prescription medication (such as prescribed cessation use), Falmouth decided to ban a delivery system that may have alternative uses in delivering medicine as technology evolves? I wish educators would actually think before they ban so we don’t end up with a long list of specific devices and revisiting this scenario every time some new technology emerges.

Of course nicotine and tobacco should not be allowed in school grounds (although public high schools often had defined smoking areas for students in the 1970s…).
