FALMOUTH — The Rotary Club is hosting an electronics recycling event on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Falmouth Shopping Center on Route 1.

The Rotary will accept items such as televisions, computer monitors, printers, scanners, DVD players, microwaves, batteries, cell phones and cords.

Large appliances, such as stoves and refrigerators, will not be accepted, nor will fluorescent bulbs, thermometers or thermostats.

The event is a fundraiser for the Rotary, which sends local students on exchange programs to other countries. Currently, the Rotary has sponsored a Yarmouth student who is in Turkey, and arranged for a young man from Spain to attend Yarmouth High School.

“One major purpose of Rotary is to promote world peace and understanding,” said Janet Ham, a Rotary member. “To me, the Youth Exchange Program not only accomplishes this mission but also nurtures future Rotarians. It’s a beautiful thing.”

Ham’s daughter, Helen, went to Thailand on the Rotary exchange program, and the Rotary invited a student from Ecuador to attend Deering High School in her place.

“While we are focusing this fundraiser on youth programs,” Ham said, “we have also consistently supported the Maine Center for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired (on Mackworth Island), the Maine Children’s Cancer Project, the Falmouth Food Pantry, and Rotary International’s Polio Plus, the program for world-wide Polio immunization.”

Anyone can participate in the recycling day, which is not limited to Falmouth residents. The Rotary will also accept cash donations during the event.
