FALMOUTH — Police are investigating the apparent stabbing of a Portland man who was found seriously injured in the Wal-Mart parking lot on Route 1.

Lt. John Kilbride said an officer found the 67-year-old man in a pool of blood during a routine building check at 3:45 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15. The man, whose name was not released, was lying next to a pickup truck near the former Wendy’s restaurant. Kilbride said the man’s injuries appeared to be stab wounds.

Police don’t know whether the injuries were self inflicted or if someone else attacked the man. Kilbride said the victim was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, and police were trying to contact his relatives.

He said the man was able to talk to the officer who discovered him, although details of the conversation were not released.
