3/3 at 12:26 a.m. Bryan P. Casterella, 36, of Crestwood Drive, Westbrook, was arrested on Roosevelt Trail, Windham, by Sgt. Kevin Conger on a charge of theft by unauthorized use of property.

Summonses

2/25 at 1:14 p.m. Matthew R. Klemperer, 18, of Entwood Road, was issued a summons at Falmouth High School, 74 Woodville Road, by Officer Robert Susi on a charge of possession of marijuana.  

No good deed goes unpunished

3/2 A 50-year-old woman who gave a ride to a hitchhiker was soon stranded on the roadside without her car. Lt. John Kilbride said the victim was coaxed into letting the hitchhiker drive her car from Portland to Falmouth. On Road 6, near Highland Lake in Falmouth, Bryan P. Casterella, 36, of Westbrook, allegedly pulled over and asked her to step out and check on the car’s brakes, which he claimed were noisy. Casterella then drove off. Shortly after midnight the next day, police briefly pursued and arrested him after spotting the stolen vehicle in Westbrook. He was charged with theft by unauthorized use of property, a misdemeanor.

Taxing discovery

3/6 at 5:04 p.m. Police say a Hammond Road resident discovered he was the victim of identity theft when he attempted to file his 2013 taxes and was told they had already been filed. Lt. John Kilbride said it’s a fairly common scam involving stolen social security numbers and fake W-2 forms. Kilbride advises filing one’s taxes as soon as possible each year.
