FALMOUTH — Town staff have selected a design consultant for the Route 1 redesign and are now in contract negotiations, Town Manager Nathan Poore said.

If talks are successful, an announcement is expected next week, he said.

Bids for the design portion of the project ranged from $170,000 to nearly $500,000, about $200,000 less than expected.

The $11.7 million Route 1 project, approved by voters in June, is designed to create a more village-like feel along the business corridor. The construction will bury utility lines and make infrastructure improvements to the street, sidewalks and intersections between the intersection with Route 88 and the Maine Turnpike interchange.

The design phase is expected to begin this fall and construction is tentatively scheduled to begin next spring.
